AMC Theatres provide sensory friendly films for families affected by autism and other special-needs

Families and caretakers of individuals affected by autism are limited when it comes to taking their loved ones and clients to public events; something as simple as taking a person with autism to a public movie theater is simply not an option. With this said, AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have joined forces to provide a sensory friendly environment for families that are affected by autism and other special-needs to enjoy family friendly films.

In the sensory friendly environment the movie theaters will turn up the lights in the theater as well as lower the sound. During the movies the “ Audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing – in other words “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned … families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie.” (source: Autism Society).

Upcoming Sensory Friendly showings* include:

January 8 – Yogi Bear

February 12 – Gnomeo & Juliet

March 12 – Mars Needs Moms

Autism

“Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. Autism is a physical condition linked to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain. The exact causes of these abnormalities remain unknown, but this is a very active area of research. There are probably a combination of factors that lead to autism.” (Source: MedlinePlus/NIH)

    Hi,
There are many theatres other than AMC that host sensory friendly screenings. Do take a look at this extensive directory at http://www.sharonscreativecorner.com/sensory-friendly-films-directory/
